Mantel – Time For Change

Our mantel has pretty much looked like this:

…for the last 4 years.  Well, minus the addition of the Braden picture since he was born 3 years ago. ;)

Not awful.  Not great.  Just blah.

My inspiration for a  mantle change up was sparked by a recent rug purchase.  This is the rug we’ve had since we moved here:

Yes, I know this is ALSO an old pic of me and a gorilla…but it’s the only picture I could find of the old rug.  Gorillas are cute.

So, we got it from Target and it has served us well…through toddler drink spills and house training a puppy.  The dark colors that covered most of the rug were great for hiding the crazy mess of our day to day life.

Now that the boys are relatively spill proof…er, not allowed to bring drinks all over the house, we recently bought this new rug from Target.

I loved how it instantly lightened the room up a ton and added a new color to our room…yellow!  It also has a little of of the deep burgundy from our last rug, but much less of it.

After the rug, I redid the mantel-scape.  Here’s what it looks like today:

I kept the same family photos.  I originally thought I wanted to change them out, but they truly are my favorites…our wedding day and each of the boys when they turned the Big “1”.  I’m a sentimental fool.

Next, I took out the old candles and added in two large glass hurricane candle holders.  They were a recent find at Kohls, on clearance for $10 each AND I had a 20% off coupon!!!  Awesome price for their size.  They are selling a similar newer version there for $80 each..on sale!

I switched out my glass vase for a new green one that I found at Walmart and added lighter stems as well.

Lastly, I shopped the house and brought in my little birds, my previously disco-ish artichoke from this post and some books.

I had originally only painted the artichoke white, but later added some watered down craft paint to tone it down a little.

Who goes lighter in their decor in the fall?  I do.  I’m pretty happy with my inexpensive and quickie mantel makeover though.

Alas, with the change in temps and seasons, I feel another change coming really soon.  Now…where are those pumpkins??

Kid Incident – The Checkbook

We’re in the midst of a HUGE tattle tale phase in our house.  I’m sure you’re all aware of how this goes down.

“MOM!  Braden…blah blah blah!”

“Mommy!  Lanham…blah blah blah.”

I sort of tune it out.  I mean you have to…It’s ALL DAY LONG!

Of course, there are always exceptions to the rule.  Especially when the tattler is older.

And, for the most part, wiser than his younger (more devious?) brother.

So here’s the INCIDENT:

The hubby is the main check writer in our house these days.  Don’t even say it.  It just works for us to have one person writing the checks and it takes one more thing off my to do list.

Anyway, so I had to write a check for something last week and after writing said check I left our checkbook out on the counter.

Big mistake.

B-boy decided to snatch it multiple times throughout the day.  For some reason, each time I took it back from him I didn’t put it back in its super-secret-keep-Braden-out-of-it spot.  Dumb me.

Why?  Probably because I was juggling a million other things

The result of my laziness?

Hubby:  “Oh, well look at this, Sabrina.”

“Oh, Braden got into the checkbook today…he’s trying to be like us…isn’t that funny?”

Hubby:  “Well, one check would be funny…”

“The entire book…not so much!”

You see, Lanham kept coming inside and telling me that Braden had something he wasn’t supposed to…tattle, tattle, tattle.

It wasn’t until Lanham brought the thing INSIDE from the back yard and put it right in front of my face, that I realized I should have listened to Big Brother.

Lanham:  “ MOM!!  He’s NOT supposed to have this, right?  RIGHT?!?”

Funny thing is that once Lanham brought it to me, I just took it from him and put it back in its proper hiding spot.

Never looked inside.

Then when D sat down to do the bills that night…well, you get the picture.

You have to admire B’s efforts to forge a signature though, right?

Braden, you little devil.

This child.  He’s mine.  All mine.  In so many ways.  Hee hee.

This is Braden’s “I’ve had enough of your camera, but I’ll throw you a bone mommy” look.  They tolerate me.

Side Table Redo

Pin It My dad and mom follow my blog.  Isn’t that cute?
After my end table redo for the lil’ bro, my dad told me that he had a few pieces in his basement.  Shopping for freebies in dad’s basement I went.
And I stumbled upon this little table…
It had seen better days and was missing part of its leg.
Or would that be its foot??  Dunno.
Either way, I found a little place in my DIY heart for it.
I started out with a little sanding and fixing the foot/leg thingy with Gorilla Glue.
It’s not perfect, but it sturdy and it will be hidden on the side of my couch.  All good.
Next, I obviously used a whole LOT of Rustoleum’s Heirloom White spray paint.  Then, I distressed it a bit with fine grit sandpaper.
After that, I wanted to add something fun to the top.
My first thought was just to use a colorful paper on part of it.   Using Mod Podge,  I added this cheery yellow paper to the center of the table top.
Then I thought about where I wanted to use the table, which is in our family room near our mini “library”.  Derek and I are book hoarders.
I sacrificed an old paperback copy of the original Wizard Of Oz.
Did you see that?  She actually cried about it.  Sorry Dorothy.
Again, I used Mod Podge to attach the strips of book pages to both ends of the table top.  After it all dried, I lightly sanded the edges of the table to remove any excess paper and then applied two coats of Mod Podge over the entire top to seal it all in.
And last, but not least, I sprayed the top with a few coats of clear acrylic since the table will be used for beverages now and then.  Mod Podge does NOT like HOT beverages.
So what do you think?  Totally new life to a cute table or death of a great book?

What I Learned Watching The VMA’s

I’m CRAZY for this group, Florence + The Machine!

Did you see her performance??  Amazing!  Fun!  New!  A little wackadoodle.  Love that.

Oh and Chelsea Handler…yikes.  Even for my taste.  I believe I heard crickets chirping more than once during her monologues.

I also learned that I’m officially getting older…Justin Beiber.  Your songs are catchy.  I want to like you…but something about it just seems creepy and wrong.  I’ll leave it to the tweens.

How about you guys?  Anyone else obsessed with watching the VMA’s year after year?

GW Wall Shelves

Another lucky stop by Goodwill and I found these great shelves.

What a STEAL!  Only $2.99/each!

They were in great shape, I just didn’t like the knotty pine finish so much…remember my knotty pine furniture redo?

I simply gave them each a light sanding and then a few coats of Rustoleum’s Heirloom White spray paint. (Finally, NO BLACK!)

I wanted a slightly worn look so I lightly sanded a few corners and a little on the sides here and there.

Then, I added some watered down some craft paint and wiped it off, leaving it heavier in a few places.

So happy that I didn’t pass these up at Goodwill.  Now, where to hang them??
